“The Big Swap” Fundraiser Idea

Posted on February 19, 2011. Filed under: Fundraising Ideas | Tags: , , , |

Yesterday, I came home with a pair of Pikolinos shoes made in Spain, an adorable red purse, Calvin Klein perfume, and a big-button grey cardigan. I attended the Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church “Big Swap,” a fundraising event for missions work. Women of all ages came to the church last night at 8pm with 5 pounds ($7.50) to donate towards missions and bags full of brand new or “gently worn” clothing that they didn’t want anymore. At the door, ladies would take your bags and in exchange give you a bronze, silver or gold “Big Swap token.” Each token represented how many items you brought, determining how many items you could leave with. (Bronze 1-10 items, silver 10-20 items, and gold 20 and beyond.) I was thrilled to be awarded with a gold big swap token! We then proceeded into the “The Big Eat” café for tea, coffee and sweet treats, while the ladies took the clothes and hug them up in their proper size category. Signs hung everywhere –  “The Big Flush” indicating the direction to the bathroom, “The Big Change” led to dressing rooms, and “The Big Point” informed women on the missions work the church supported. Once the clothes were hung and the accessories sorted, the emporium was opened for business. Women entered the large room which was once a church hall and now a converted shopping center. To go shopping without having to pay for clothes, shoes and jewelry is every woman’s dream (and her husband’s dream!) Towards the end of the night, finer clothes were sold in an auction. The women were a bit shy on the first item, so I bid 2 pounds and walked away with an adorable lacy black shirt. All of the proceeds from the auction and 5 pound entrance fee went towards missions.

You can use this idea for fundraising – it’s easy and fun. You will need a supportive team of helpers, wire and clothes pins, donated treats for the café, and a large enough room for a big group of women and clothes. Pick a date for your “Big Swap,” get a team of women to help (and a few men to help with the set up and tear down), and advertise, advertise, advertise. Hand out flyers to friends, women in the community, and coworkers. The bigger response of women coming out, the bigger selection of clothing to choose from and the bigger amount of money you will raise! Make new friends, shop for free and raise money for a good cause… it’s a win-win situation!

Enjoy looking through pictures from the event!

Setting Up!

Welcoming the ladies at the front door…

Each lady who worked at the fundraisor wore a bright pink headband.  Then if anyone had questions, they would know who to go to!

"Cooking For Christ" Promotional table

At the entrance, I had a promotional “Cooking For Christ” display.  The ladies could learn more about Table Talking Ministries and had a chance to win free cupcakes.

Congrats to Kathryn Douglas
 and Sarah Ryan for winning!
