Which classic comfort foods remind you of home, whisking you away to your childhood?  What do you remember about family meals?  Who sat where? What you ate every Sunday?  Who started the fights?

Family meals seem so unimportant at the time, yet they shape and mold us for the rest of our lives.  Meal preparation can seem like a daily chore, yet time and time again our mothers or grandmothers labored out of love to nourish us physically and emotionally. Our mothers and grandmothers used food as a tasty tool to bring together family and friends with different personalities, passions and principles.

To savor the moments we once enjoyed around the table, we obtain the recipes to taste the flavours of our family heritage.  Age-old family cooking traditions have been passed down from generation to generation by memory, by words scribbled on food-stained index cards and by word documents sent in emails.

Recipes of apple crisp, mince pies and Sunday roast are not the only things we can pass on to the next generation.  Paul says to Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:5, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.”  In the home, these two influential women passed on their faith one generation at a time providing Timothy with a strong spiritual heritage.

Home is where we see faith worked out in the struggles and monotony of everyday life, yet Lois and Eunice played their important role in passing on their sincere faith to the next generation.  A parent’s teaching, example and prayers are an extremely formative influence and can lead to the passing on of faith in families.

Although the United Kingdom has a strong spiritual heritage, there is a gap forming in the next generation.  How can we practically pass on our faith?  We can actively play our part—no matter if we are parents, relatives or Christian friends.  We can personalize our faith by spending quality time with the next generation at home, at work and at coffee shops.  We can pray for the next generation.  Paul did not let distance or circumstances in prison hinder his prayers for Timothy.  We can preserve our faith by teaching the next generation the truth of Scripture as Timothy’s mother had taught him (2 Timothy 3:15).

When you find a dependable and delicious recipe, you pass it on.  I am passing on these mouth-watering mini ham puffs to you.  When you find the truth of the gospel, you pass it on.  Personally taste and see that God is good and PASS IT ON!


100 g (3.5 ounces) ham
3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
45 g (1/4 cup) shredded cheese
1 egg
1 tablespoon snipped fresh parsley
1 ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
160 g puff pastry (or 1 package refrigerated crescent rolls)


  1. Preheat the oven to 190 °C (350°F).  Place muffin cases into a mini muffin pan.
  2. Finely chop ham and onion and place in a bowl.  Add cheese, egg, parsley, mustard and black pepper.  Mix well.
  3. Roll out puff pastry dough and cut into 2.5 x 2 inch rectangles.  Place puff pastry into the cases.  Fill each case with a spoonful of the mixture.  Bake 14-16 minutes or until the pastry is light golden brown.  Enjoy with family and friends and then pass the recipe on!
